Mireya was a little beastie for months when it came to the dishwasher. She would come barreling over the second you opened it and grab clean dishes only to run off with them. If you were trying to load dirty dishes, she would touch
every single one of them no matter how many times you said NO. Jason and I would get so frustrated, because we couldn't do dishes while she was napping or sleeping, because it would wake her up, but getting them done while she was awake was impossible. It was a catch 22 and it was getting old fast.
Starting about a month or so ago, I decided that she was old enough to learn how to help mommy put the clean dishes away. After all, she was helping with cleaning up her room, putting dirty laundry in the hamper and a few other chores. She does a great job with everything else and she really enjoys helping. I told her one day that she was going to help mommy with the dishes and she got so excited! She learned VERY quickly how to put things in drawers and in all the lower cabinets. It's actually been a big help to me. Yes, the whole job is slower than if I were doing it myself, but it's certainly a lot faster than all the times where I was chasing her around trying to get her to bring the clean dishes back. Plus, when we're done with the clean dishes, I explain that only mommy can do the dirty dishes and 99% of the time, she leaves me alone! I guess she is satisfied that she got to help with at least part of the job and we manage to avoid the tantrums over not being allowed to touch all the dirty dishes.
A few times a day, I ask Mireya, "Do you want to help mommy do the dishes?" She always shakes her whole body yes and runs towards the dishwasher saying, "Deeses! Deeses!" It has been so wonderful until today. Jason is a bit new to the concept of having the baby help with the dishes. Earlier today I saw he was doing the dishes and getting frustrated with Mireya getting in the way. I asked him to let her help, because that's what she's used to doing with me. He forgot that Mireya helping means complete supervision when the cupboards are open (normally they are closed and locked.) He kept his back turned for a bit too long and....

... goodbye casserole dish. It was a really nice casserole dish too. Ah well. I suppose that it's just one of the hazards of having a toddler. Good news is that Mireya looked so sad, so I got to pick her up and get a few rare snuggles and lovies out of it. Ok, good news for me. I think Jason learned his lesson, but I'll guess we'll see in future posts...
